Lip Filler Aftercare: 20 Top Tips From an Expert

Sarah Murphy is a fully licensed and accredited Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner offering a wide range of anti-ageing treatments – she is also the owner of Anti Ageing Aesthetics clinic in Garstang, Lancashire. Sarah has given hundreds of women dermal filler injections in their lips and so she will be taking us through her 20 top tips for lip filler aftercare to help your lips heal better and faster to achieve your ideal plumped-up look even faster…

After Getting Lip Fillers, DO…

The First Day

  • Do drink plenty of water and stay hydrated to help your lips heal.
  • Do choose easy-to-eat foods, as this will mean you’re wiping and disturbing your lips less.

The First Week

  • Sleep on your back if possible – don’t sleep on your face.
  • Use a topical treatment if you need to calm or soothe the skin, such as Bepanthen or Arnica cream. You can use it up to 3 times a day.

Generally

  • Do give yourself plenty of time if getting this treatment done for an event. It can take between 2-4 weeks for lip filler to settle and achieve your desired (fabulous!) look.
  • Do sleep with your head elevated on pillows – this will reduce swelling.
  • Do expect fantastic, plump lips that last up to 6 months!

After Getting Lip Fillers, DON’T…

The First Day

  • Don’t use a harsh or aggressive cleaning or exfoliant on your face or near your lips.
  • Don’t drink through a straw on your first day as this increases pressure on the lips.
  • Don’t apply makeup to your lips.
  • Don’t drink alcohol, as it thins blood.
  • Don’t eat too much salt, as this can dehydrate you.
  • Avoid kissing or massaging your lips.

The First Few Days

  • Don’t worry if your lips bruise or feel a little lumpy for a few days at around day 3 or 4 after getting fillers – this is totally normal!
  • Don’t sleep on your face – sleep on your back if possible.
  • Don’t exercise strenuously for 24-48 hours afterwards. Elevated blood pressure may make swelling or bruising worse! Light exercise is fine.
  • Avoid high temperature environments like saunas, steam rooms, very hot showers, or heated exercise sessions.

The First Week

  • Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, and vitamin E supplements as this may make bruising worse.
  • Don’t fly – the air pressure can make swelling and bruising worse.

The First 2 Weeks

Avoid facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, IPL, waxing or laser treatments to your face for 2 weeks after getting fillers. We can discuss your options and future treatment plans with you!
