Overview: Tattoos don’t always stand the test of time, but modern laser technology means they no longer have to be permanent. In this post, we explain how laser tattoo removal works, what to expect during and after treatment, and answer common questions about results, downtime, and safety.

Laser Tattoo Removal: A Safe and Effective Solution

One thing people always say when you get a tattoo: “Won’t you regret that?”

Tattoos were once considered permanent, but advances in laser technology mean unwanted ink no longer has to be for life. Dark and multi-coloured tattoos can now be safely and effectively reduced using advanced laser systems.

At Anti-Ageing Aesthetics in Garstang, we use the Harmony XL Pro Clearlift to break down tattoo pigment while minimising the risk of scarring and skin damage.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal works using a mechanical Q-switched effect that targets tattoo ink particles beneath the skin.

Tattoo ink particles are too large for the body to naturally remove, which is why tattoos remain visible for years. During treatment, laser energy shatters these particles into tiny fragments that are small enough for the body to process and remove through the lymphatic system.

Over time and across multiple sessions, the tattoo gradually fades with minimal risk of scarring or hypopigmentation.

During the treatment

Before treatment, any dark hair in the area will need to be shaved. Protective goggles are worn to shield your eyes from the laser.

A handheld laser device is applied to the skin. You’ll hear a whip-crack sound and may feel a sensation similar to a hot elastic band snapping against the skin.

To improve comfort, we also use a cryo cooling system that directs cold air onto the treated area throughout the session.

After your tattoo removal session

Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear red and swollen. Spot bleeding, a raised rash, or blistering can occur in the hours following treatment — this is normal and temporary.

Applying a cool pack or aloe vera gel can help soothe the area. Some bruising may also appear around the treated skin.

You should avoid the following after treatment:

  • Sun exposure or tanning beds for 1 week
  • Picking or scratching scabs
  • Using soap or perfumed products for 48 hours
  • Strenuous physical activity for 48 hours
  • Swimming and saunas until scabs have fallen off
